Message from the Chief of Police Services This is a result of the working relationship between the residents of the city, its Council, and the Sheriff’s Department. Overall, Lake Forest was ranked as 10th safest of all cities. Lake Forest enjoys a low crime rate, and was recognized by a national firm as the 7th safest city in the United States (of cities with populations between 75,000 and 100,000) for 2010. We also have a Homeless Liaison Officer and a Deputy assigned to the Homeless Outreach Team In addition to these services offered directly from Lake Forest Police Services, the sheriff’s department also provides street and regional narcotics suppression programs, a Gang Enforcement Team, Mounted Unit, Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), Hostage Negotiations, the Drug Use is Life Abuse drug prevention program, and a complement of patrol-trained Reserve Deputy Sheriffs, many of whom volunteer their time for city events such as the Annual 4th of July Parade. Services provided through the City include direct and preventative patrol, a Special Enforcement Team, Traffic Enforcement (motorcycle and commercial), a deputy assigned to the regional Directed Enforcement Team, School Resource Officers, Bike Patrol, Neighborhood and Business Watch programs, as well as emergency preparedness classes for the community. Lake Forest contracts with the Sheriff's Department for law enforcement services. Staff includes five Sergeants, three Investigators, 37 Deputies, an Investigative Assistant, five Community Services Officers, and a Crime Prevention Specialist. Each problem increased the likeliness that an inmate would not “make it out alive,” the report said.Captain Christine Berryman serves as the Chief of Police Services for the city of Lake Forest. The report points to delays in treatment, failure to identify health threats when booking inmates, failure to diagnose serious mental illness and a slowness in referring inmates to a health care professional. In 2018, a county grand jury issued a report concluding that 44% of the Orange County jail deaths since 2015 may have been preventable. The Orange County jail system, operated by the Sheriff’s Department, has been criticized in past years for the quality of care offered by deputies as well as nurses from the county Health Care Agency. He died later that day, despite efforts to resuscitate him. ![]() ![]() ![]() When Lopez entered the county’s jail system on March 13, 2020, he told jail nurses that he had diabetes, was an alcoholic and had recently suffered a seizure, according to a report done by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.Īt one point, paramedics were called, but they refused to take Lopez to the hospital because they deemed he was not in critical condition, according to the lawsuit.īut within hours, he was transported to Anaheim Global Medical Center, where he suffered hallucinations and appeared to be trying to talk with his mother, the lawsuit alleged. “The man was suffering from the effects of the things he had done to himself.” “I question whether there was liability,” Wagner said. The family’s lawsuit alleges county health workers ignored several red flags that he was in poor health and should have taken him to the hospital sooner.Ĭounty Supervisor Don Wagner was the lone dissenter in the 4-1 vote Tuesday, July 25, by the Board of Supervisors to accept the settlement.
